Bridging Past and Present: An Hour of Historical Discovery at Accord Hospice

Recently, I was honoured to lead a one-hour historical talk at ACCORD Hospice, an institution that since 1982 has provided compassionate support to patients and their families in our community. The event was a unique opportunity to connect the past with the present, using technology and shared memories to deepen our appreciation of local heritage, all within the supportive environment of ACCORD Hospice.

Innovative Presentation at a Cherished Community Haven

The session commenced with a captivating indoor drone flight inside the Coats Memorial, an architectural gem significant to our community’s history. This 15-minute segment featured before and after videos, demonstrating the meticulous preservation efforts that have safeguarded this landmark’s grandeur. The drone’s eye view provided attendees a novel perspective of the Memorial's interior, fostering a deeper connection to our shared architectural heritage.

Revisiting the Vibrant 1980s

Transitioning from the technological marvels of today to the cherished memories of yesterday, the next 15 minutes were dedicated to exploring a collection of old photographs from the 1980s. This segment turned into a vibrant storytelling session where participants shared personal anecdotes about the local shops and communal spaces depicted in the photos. It was a poignant reminder of the role these places played in knitting the fabric of our community.

Celebrating Local Institutions: Cinemas and Schools

The latter half of the talk focused on the historical evolution of local cinemas and schools, pivotal institutions in our community's social and educational landscape. Through anecdotes, historical data, and photographs, I highlighted their transformation over the decades and their enduring impact on community life. This discussion not only served as a testament to their significance but also reflected the changing dynamics of our local society.

The Role of ACCORD Hospice in Community Engagement

Hosting this talk at ACCORD Hospice underscored the hospice’s vital role in our community—not just as a provider of medical and palliative care, but as a centre of community engagement and support. The hospice’s ongoing partnership with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and Renfrewshire’s Health & Social Care Partnership has enabled it to respond effectively to the evolving needs of patients and families, making it an ideal venue for enriching community activities like this historical talk.

Conclusion

This event was more than just a recount of historical facts; it was an engaging experience that enriched our collective memory and strengthened community bonds. By integrating innovative technology and fostering an environment of shared stories and experiences, ACCORD Hospice and I aimed to celebrate our past while acknowledging the contributions of all those who support and trust in ACCORD’s mission. This session not only honoured our history but also highlighted the importance of community and continuity in our ongoing journey through time.
